Just got my service manual yesterday and was looking through it last night... I believe it specifies refilling with 2 quarts even, a short run of the engine, then a level-check & topping up to the right level. That should avoid overfilling.
Similar to what I do with a car that takes "5 quarts": add 4 - 4.5 quarts, run it a minute to check for leaks, then recheck and top-up. On a car, it's really a pain to drain just a little oil!
